'Michael Norgrove and the Criticism Facing Boxing' We were all deeply saddened to hear about the recent death of ex-Repton boxer Michael Norgrove. His tragedy affected many people in the sport and has reopened the debate about the safety of amateur and professional boxing. Opponents of the sport have responded to Michael’s passing away by criticising the dangerous nature of it, but seem to have overlooked the degree to which boxing seeks to protect its competitors. In Michael’s last fight, referee Jeff Hinds immediately noticed his erratic movement and loss of balance and ended the fight. Professional medical staff were in the ring straight away to deal with Michael and he was in hospital receiving treatment only twenty-five minutes later. The response from the officials and emergency services was extremely admirable and this is typical of a sport that does the utmost to safeguard its competitors’ wellbeing. Anyone with a real knowledge of boxing understands the extremely rigorous levels of protection afforded to boxers. The last one to die as a result of a match in the UK was James Murray in 1995, over seventeen years ago. Considering the thousands of professional and amateur fights that are scheduled each year, this is an impressive statistic and something that is often conveniently ignored by critics. In Michael’s case, there was simply nothing more that could have been done. He had recently undertaken his mandatory annual MRI scan and was seemingly perfectly fit and healthy; ‘The Zambian Hitman’ was even winning his last fight and on course to record a sixth straight career win. His friends, family and trainers all provided him with tremendous support and the staff who dealt with him following the incident all performed their duties with the clinical effectiveness that has become the high-quality standard for the sport. So, given the freak nature of Michael Norgrove’s acute injury, why is a sport that prides itself on safety still gathering such criticism? There will always be those who condemn contact sports, especially one such as boxing where the majority of blows are aimed at the (usually unprotected) head. This criticism is to be expected but what would realistically happen if its detractors got their way and boxing was banned? The sport would not simply disappear overnight and, with a lack of professional funding, the stringent guidelines and safety procedures that keep boxing so safe would no longer be maintainable. Instead, we must continue to focus on further improving boxing’s already exceptional degrees of competitor safeguarding and promote these standards more widely. The more aware we make the public, the greater the respect and appreciation for the sport will be, which can only be a good thing for the honourable men and women who work so hard to keep boxers safe. To find out more about Michael Norgrove and the issues facing boxing, please read thislaw blog on the case. The Repton Boxing Club would like to Thank Daniel Yeo for writing this Tribute for Michael.

R.I.P....Michael Norgrove loses fight for his Life We are saddened to hear that Ex Repton Boxer Michael Norgrove has died nine days after collapsing in the ring at The Blackfriars Venue London, doing what he loved. ...The Following article was on 'Boxing Rec' The 31 year-old light-middleweight (5-0) from Woodford Green passed away nine days after being admitted to hospital following his collapse in the ring during a bout in London. On Thursday 28th March, unbeaten 31 year-old Norgrove boxed Sedgley’s Tom Bowen (3-4-1) in a contest the Zambia-born man was expected to win. It was the second fight of the evening on what was the first bill at the Ring, Blackfriars, for 73 years. It turned out to be the last bout of the night. The fights scheduled to follow Norgrove v Bowen were cancelled after a completely unexpected tragedy ensued. Norgrove made a good start, knocking Bowen down in the first round. However, he was pulled out of the bout by referee Jeff Hinds after 29 seconds of the fifth round with the official reportedly noticing something unusual about the fighter’s appearance. Hinds made a prescient decision. The boxer then collapsed and received immediate medical attention. He was then rushed to hospital where he was operated on to treat a bleed on the brain. Boxer Phil Gill was the house second on the night and posted on the BoxRec forum the morning after the tragedy unfolded. “It was a horrible thing to see happen he hadn’t taken a single big shot so makes you wonder where the damage was done,” wrote Gill. “[He] was up in the fight having dropped the other lad in the first round. “I know refs and the board get slagged a lot but I felt Jeff Hinds [the contest’s referee] was spot on in calling a halt to the fight before Mike collapsed and never got hit with anything. [It] was well spotted. The oxygen and docs were in there within seconds.” Gill posted this afternoon: “He put up a hard fight. [There were] lots of complications after surgery [he] was up and down they took him off the sedation and ventilators few days ago and it was a matter of waiting for him to wake up but .. xxxxx” Norgrove’s first five fights were on shows promoted by Steve Goodwin. Goodwin told BoxRec News this afternoon: “I am proud to have been associated with Michael. He was always a kind and warm human being, a very talented boxer and it is a very sad loss to everyone who ever met him. “My thoughts go out to his family.” Jon Briggs, who specialises in interviewing novice pros for this website, spoke to Michael Norgrove back in September 2010. Having turned over five months earlier, Norgrove had won his first two contests. Norgrove said: "I know it’s a bit early to start talking belts and titles just yet but aside from getting paid isn’t that why boxers step into the ring?... I want to move up quite quickly, I want to step up a good level every fight. I haven’t got time to waste as I’m 30 in January.” The headline of the piece was taken from his last quote – ‘Michael Norgrove: I haven’t got time to waste’. A tragedy that no one knew, least of all Michael himself, that he would have such little time at all. Our thoughts from all at The Repton are with Michaels Family & Friends at this sad time. Michael Norgrove in Hospital Light middleweight boxer Michael Norgrove (5-0), from Woodford Green, has been rushed to hospital and is undergoing surgery after collapsing in the ring and suffering suspected bleeding on the brain. Michael boxed for The Repton between 2008 and 2010. He represented the club as an 'OpenClass' Boxer on a number of occasions. During his amateur days 'crowdpleaser' Michael was a powerful boxer and everyone of his contests was an 'all action' humdinger of a bout. Michael was boxing at the Newly refurbished venue 'The Ring' in Blackfriars, the first professional boxing to be staged at the venue in 73 years. The remaining bouts on the card were cancelled. The undefeated 31-year-old, who has five wins from five, was contesting his sixth professional fight when he fell to the ground. With suspected bleeding on the brain, the Zambia-born fighter was immediately taken to hospital where he was operated on. Everyone at The Repton wishes Michael a full recovery and our thoughts are with his family.
