Gary started boxing at the age of 11, at St.pancras boxing club, where the master, George Odwell trained him.When George left & went with Dave Odwell (His younger brother and 1976 Olympic team Captain) to Repton, he stayed another year,where darkie smith trained him & guided Gary to a national schoolboy final. In 1974 Gary went to Repton,where Billy Taylor trained him. Darkie Smith went to Repton a year later. Along with Billy Taylor & Darkie Smith, Gary won two ABA London Junior Titles, two London Feds Titles,& three London schoolboy titles. Gary turned senior in 1977 under the watchfull eye of Tony Burns & George
Odwell. Gary won The Port of London Novice title, represented London v army, captained a team from Tower Hamlets v Liverpool select. Gary retired from boxing in 1984 & started coaching the seniors with Tony Burns & George, thanks to the help from Billy Taylor. In 1992 Gary stopped coaching when his 2 sons Sam & Charlie were born. In 2004 , Gary went back to coaching seniors at Hornchurch for two seasons and then in 2007 he returned back to the Repton and has never looked back. Once a Repton Man you'll always be one !

During his 45 years at Repton BC, ‘The Legendary’Tony Burns has coached the Great World champion John H, Stracey passed through his hands; World light-middle-weight champion Maurice Hope and 2000 Olympic super-heavyweight champion Audley Harrison.
During the time he has been at Repton, around 300 boxers have won National championships and 10 have represented their country at the Olympic Games.
Born in Bridgend, Wales, Tony is a member of the well known Burns, East End family where he has lived for over 60 years. He boxed 22 times for Wales as a Repton boxer and is a former Welsh national champion.
Tony has attended to 11 Olympic Games including London 2012 in the Capacity of Coach, adviser and consultant to The British Olympic Team over that period.
In March 2009 Tony was summoned to Buckingham Palace to be awarded an MBE, by The Queen , for his dedication and services over 41 years to Amateur Boxing.
Tony Burns is The Senior coach and Matchmaker at The Repton and can be found in the Gym most nights of the week keeping a watchful eye on Budding world Champions!
