Events at the Repton

REPTON BOXING CLUB are to take part in a prestigious international match at York Hall next month on a gala charity night of amateur boxing  - and will be managed by one of the club's favourite sons.

Repton will take on the powerful Gabala club of Azerbaijan on Friday June 27th in aid of World Refugee Week with proceeds going to the Mo Farah Foundation.

And the team for the nine-bout contest will be managed on a special one-off basis by Darren Barker, former Commonwealth Champion as a Repton boxer and who gloriously won the IBF World Middleweight title as a pro by outpointing Daniel Geale last year.

The Gabala team is being brought over to England by Tony Adams, the former Arsenal and England captain. Over the last four years, Tony has been head coach of the club's football team in the Azerbaijani Premier League and is now a sporting consultant.

The event was launched at The Bath House this week with Tony and Darren in attendance to speak to Sky Sports News, talkSPORT and the national and local press.

"I am delighted to be involved with this event," said Darren. "I have always been proud to be known as a Repton boxer and to manage a team representing the club will be a huge honour.

"It should be a cracking night with a special atmosphere. I have always loved boxing at York Hall and it's a great chance for the club and the lads selected to showcase themselves."

A 1,200 sell-out crowd is anticipated for the contest, which is being promoted by The European Azerbaijan Society to mark World Refugee Week. There are 875,000 refugees or Internally Displaced Persons in Azerbaijan, the highest number per capita in the world.

It is therefore appropriate that TEAS should link up with Mo Farah, who himself left Somalia as a boy to emigrate to Great Britain, and set up his foundation to provide aid to fight starvation and disease in East Africa.

Mo agreed to his foundation participating in the event thanks to his friendship with Tony Adams. The double London 2012 Olympic gold medallist is a keen Arsenal supporter.

The night, which will be hosted by Sky Sports presenter Gary Newbon, will also feature a number of special guests including the great Frank Bruno. More will be announced over the next few weeks, along with the Repton team.

A limited number of ringside tickets, at just £20, have been reserved exclusively for Repton and are available from the club.

Tickets will also be Available at the door on the evening !
